An exception to this rule is Nancy van de Vate. Nancy has a headstart since she has English as her mother tongue, but it is the way she speaks about music — her own and others’ — that is remarkable. Only the second woman in America to be awarded a PhD for composition, she has obviously had to explicate her art in words and bring forth its meaning to audiences and musicians alike. She is one of those composers whose largeness of spirit is fully reflected in every sentence she utters.
In her tastefully furnished Viennese apartment, Nancy told us about many aspects of her past and present, her publishing activities in which she assisted the work of many great American composers, and her artistic intention which is always, it seems to me in retrospect, about authenticity and the thematic approach. The women composers who, for today, can take it as a matter of course that the profession offers them every opportunity, can thank female composers such as Nancy van de Vate for paving the way: but that is not the function of her art, it stands in its own right as a solid and inviting musical achievement.
